Album Reviews

With Idle Wandering, Flourishing Illusions have brought a worthy offering to the altar of Omaha metal. The ten short tracks have it all: crushing riffs, tasteful leads, gritty growls, soulful cleans, and even catchy electronic interludes. As a drummer myself, I particularly appreciate the use of acoustic drums on this album - in a world of triggered and programmed machines, the natural sound and feel of real drums brings an energy to the music that simply can’t be achieved any other way. The lyrics may not be in the same vein as the last death metal album you bought, but they are fitting for a band called Flourishing Illusions. In the place of gore and blasphemy, we get tales of self-doubt and     self-discovery. Even “My Brother Was Eaten By Wolves on the Connecticut Turnpike” contains some well-crafted imagery and has a strong allegorical vibe. The album’s biggest shortcoming is that at times the production sounds a little flat, but it’s still plenty listenable, and, hey, it’s death metal - not everybody needs to be Steely Dan! Flourishing Illusions may not be breaking any new ground on Idle Wandering, but they’ve made an excellent first effort and I look forward to hearing what they put out next. Favorite tracks: “Flourishing Illusions,” “Self-Preservation,” and “Ego Death”

WHoop! WHoop!   The artwork for our album, Idle Wandering, has made its way into our hands.  We had the pleasure of working with YEllow Mushi (@meganmushi - Instagram), and he straight up killed it.  His freehand illustrations are amazing, and he nailed our concept. Anyone looking for some work to be done, We highly recommend working with him.

Stage Reviews

If there was ever any doubt, be it known that Omaha newcomers Flourishing Illusions know how to put on a show. They bring it all. Following a pre-recorded intro, the three-piece tore straight into an onslaught of crunchy death metal goodness. Throughout the night they delivered flawless performances of 7 or 8 songs from their newly released Idle Wandering. There’s certainly enough talent in this band to keep a trio performance exciting, but they took it a step further, filling out their sound with backing tracks that ensured full immersion in the Flourishing Illusions experience. And how do you push a perfect performance over the edge when the energy, talent, and atmosphere are all just right? Coordinated shoe lights of course! These guys are the real deal, and they know how to have a great time while doing what they do best. I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the near future.
